Yesterday’s surprise firing of San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer had me thinking of a matter non-Giants related. Who would you like to see get the next head coaching shot.
I’d love for Niners assistant head coach Mike Singletary to get that job. He was a great, great middle linebacker. Real intense. Supposedly a tremendous teacher. With an already strong defense in San Diego, I’ll bet he can get the Chargers to the next playoff level, or even the Super Bowl.
Anyone thinking Jim Fassel out there? He wasn’t on the list of possibilities I read. But if you think he’d make a good fit, tell me why.
Tiki Barber? Oh. Cheap shot. Sorry.
Ciao for now.

And WHO is Tiki Barber? Oh, you mean the Mouth That Roared?
Where’s Don Air Coryell? He could bring back Dan Fouts and lead these Chargers to glory.
Singletary might get it. The list of “possibles” isn’t very long, and most jobs have been filled. Gee, do you think there are reasons Country Club Fassel hasn’t landed a head coaching job since the Giants let him go?
I do.
Del:
A second literary reference!
I’d be surprised if Fassel ever got another job in the NFL. He needs to go get himself a college job and rehab his image. Those job interviews after he got fired—you know, the ones he basically blew off and told owners, I’m here if you want me, and if not, fine—really did him in.
Has Fassel had off the field problems the last few years?? I have heard some rumors that he likes the late nights? has he had marital problems. Teams are stupid for not giving him another chance. A guy who coached in NY for 7 yrs with 2 division titles and a Super Bowl appearance isn’t too shaby…
Give Club Fassel another shot
I despise Tiki Barber now and it would be nice to see someone in the Giant front office have some sac and release a statement crushing him for a change. It will be addition bu subtraction not having that cnacer around anymore. It’S NOT like we won anything with him anywaYS
Nud:
Jim was a nice guy and very accommodating to us in the media. But he did enjoy the trappings of fame, perhaps a little too much. He liked the celebrity golf tournaments and hobnobbing with the rich and famous, which sort of goes against the hermit-like lifestyle of most NFL coaches. Owners want to hear that you’ll spend every waking hour, and some of the sleeping ones, too, figuring out how to make your team better. I don’t think Fassel gives off that impression.
Well said, Ernie. It also would be good if you did a column, not just a news story, about Tiki Barber. Then you could lay out some hard-nosed opinions, based on facts.
Literary references? I don’t get to do very much reading
here at 221-B Baker St. in London. Plus, it’s tough by gaslight.
As I inferred, it’s elementary, dear Del.
I’m so tired of this Barber stuff that sometimes I feel like I’ve built the Bridges at Tiki-Ri.
“Watson, come here. I want to see you.”
Ooops…wrong Watson.
Tired of Tiki Barber? Tiki-Ri, eh?
Well, then start a thread on Sal the Barber,
Miller Barber, Jerry Barber….or Perry Como.
Oy, another con-Tiki comment?
