No Feely?

March
7

The Giants apparently don’t feel an 84 percent field goal average over the last two years was good enough to open the wallet wide for placekicker Jay Feely.

feely.jpg The team made only a lukewarm effort to keep the unrestricted Feely after he finished a visit to Miami, and the kicker has decided to take his business elsewhere. He’ll sign tomorrow with either the Dolphins, Falcons, or Chiefs. That leaves the Giants with undrafted rookie Josh Huston and a cheap veteran to be signed later.

You can talk about Feely’s lack of range all you want, but I think it was a mistake to let him get away. A strengthened coverage team with a healthy David Tyree would certainly have been able to compensate for some short kickoffs, as it did in 2005. And he was capable of cranking it up for the occasional 50-yarder in the right conditions. But people still haven’t forgotten about those missed field goals in Seattle in ‘05, and that ill-convceived 52-yarder that fell short and was returned 108 yards for a touchdown by Devin Hester.

Still, it’s hard to blame Feely for wanting to go elsewhere. There’s a lot of money being thrown around. And he found someone to give it to him.——————————————————
Well, I’m done with jury duty. Performed my civic responsibility, but they kicked me out. Wasn’t a complete waste, however. One of the defense lawyers said he grew up in Port Chester and has read my stuff for years. And the plaintiff’s lawyer told me his son, an orthpedic surgeon, was the one that did the surgery on Joe Montana’s back in the ‘80s. Pretty cool.

I thought Feely was one of the few consistent players you could count on each week. Obviously that kind of behavior isn’t going to fly in this organization.

You had jury duty (of sorts), too? Sam over at Rangers’ Report is currently serving. Maybe they sent out notices to everyone at the LoHud offices.

I was never a big Feeley fan but until they have someone to take his place I have to agree that this was a mistake…

The Bears’ fiasco wasnt Feely’s fault, It was Coughlin’s fault. And Seattle was a one-game glitch in ‘05. Feely’s kickoffs often were short. But still, I think this was a mistake unless they have the grandson of Don Chandler or the son of Raul Allegre hidden somewhere.

How old is Matt Bahr now? Talk about Mr. Reliable. What a money kicker he was.

This FA period doesn’t look good for the Giants so far.
    Get your helmet ready, Ernie.

Jury duty? Perhaps Ernie was really
in the audience for a few “Judge Judy” tapings.

I have no idea whether Huston will work out (Gostkowski did jump in for the Pats last year and did just fine, though of course he was much more highly regarded coming out of college), but I’m not sorry to see Feely go.

For many fans, it was that miserable night in Seattle that turned them against Feely. That didn’t do it for me, although I admit is certainly didn’t leave me with that “I can’t wait for this guy to be kicking for the Super Bowl!” feeling. For me, it was an article in the Times in December that did it. The article noted the similarities between Feely and Barber in terms of their mutual interest in doing things other than play football, and made it seem like Feely was going to be increasingly focused on trying to set up media contacts.

It’s one thing to put up with that from a Pro Bowl running back, but another to have it come from a kicker.

Good points Subway Hero-Losing Feely is something I can deal with just as long as this Huson guy can kick, if not well then another snafu by Jerry thus far. Jerry still has a chance to get this right. If he signs D Rhodes and K Curtis, trades for Bly or gets a corner 1st rd and maybe signs 1 good FA linebacker along with 1-2 linebackers in the draft we have a chance to be ok. I am really interested to see how G Wilkinson progresses. He was said to be NFL ready coming out of the draft but as the yr went on he played less and less. I dont think he was even active for the last game or 2. Is it him, or was Tim Lewis’s scheme not made for his ability?? The real key for the Giant D will be how they react to the new D Coordinator. Hopefully we found a diamond in the rough with Spagnulo (sp)
