Eli’s A Bit Richer

The Giants’ offseason conditioning program started today, and Eli Manning entered the locker room a little bit richer.
Actually, a lot richer. As a provision of his original, $54 million contract, which ran through 2009, Manning’s playing time the past three seasons enabled him to void the 2008 and 2009 seasons unless the Giants paid him a $5 million bonus which would buy back those two seasons.
They did pay him the bonus. And as a result of buying back those seasons, Manning’s base salary rose to $6 million in ‘07, $8 million in ‘08 and ‘8.5 million in ‘09.
They are also obliged to pay him a $3 million roster bonus by April 1, the 30th day of the league year, because he took more than 45 percent of the snaps the last two years.
This, you should know, is not earthshaking stuff. There’s no way the Giants were going to let Manning go after this season, anyway, so they had no choice but to pay him the money. It doesn’t affect the original length of the contract; simply the way the money was paid out.
“It is the same contract that was reported as six years, between $45 and $54 million back in ‘04,” a Giants spokesman said. “We exercised a buyback which was intended to be exercised all along, and has been planned for accordingly.”
Still, there’s no better salve for a bruised psyche than a $5 million check. All he has to do now is live up to it.

A moment of silence, please, for Texas, which I had going all the way to the final game against Florida. My brackets are now officially a mess.

Ernie,
That payment to Eli does impact the
fans’ money. There goes part
of the season tix price increase.
Eli sure has not been worth the ride
so far.
Came up short with the Longhorns, eh?
Sorry to hear it.
BTW, The blog’s mechanism for posting
comments has been malfunctioning lately.
It even wipes out what you’re trying to post.
People will tire of that real fast.
Who wants to type their words of widsom
all over again?
Del:
I know what you mean. Our techie-type person has been trying to deal with this stuff the last few days. Something about the server and the host and the breakup of the Soviet Union. I don’t understand it. But they’ve had it fixed, only to have it go Kaflooey again and again.
All I can say is, we’re hoping to get the problems fixed permanently. Until then, keep re-typing. Your “Plato”-like wisdom is invaluable, Not to mention your encyclopedic knowlege of all things literary.
Mmmmm…Manhattan’s Plato’s Retreat was
not quite in the literary category.
Caligula with lutes and flutes, maybe.
But not literary.
Oh, now I get it…you’re playing innocent.
I had Tex win it, looks like you and I are pretty done.
