Okay, gang. Just got done with Tom Coughlin, and there’s some pretty bad news brewing.
An MRI showed that backup weakside linebacker Gerris Wilkinson subluxed his kneecap Monday night. That means he dislocated it, but it popped back on its own. Ouch! But the pictures indicated there’s no ligament damage, though there is a great amount of swelling and pain. He’s expected to miss two to three weeks, at least.
Here’s the really bad news, though. It kind of throws a wrench into any thoughts of moving the strongside starter Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end if THE ABSENT ONE decides to call it a career. Or even if he holds out through the end of two-a-days. The way things stand now, if they were to move Kiwanuka up front, Kawika Mitchell would flip over to the strong side. But that would leave the weakside spot vacant, unless you really believe third-stringer Barry Robertson was a possible answer there.
Don’t.
Chase Blackburn could move into weakside, but his experience there is minimal and he’s really more of a middle linebacker. So Coughlin will have quite a situation on his hands if THE ABSENT ONE persists in thinking rather than playing.
The best solution for all involved is for William Joseph to prove he’s capable of playing both pass and run in Strahan’s starting spot. Then they rotate in sift in Justin Tuck and Adrian Awasom, who looked good in rushing the passer in today’s only workout. Better yet, have Justin Tuck’s Lisfranc surgery move along and put him over there instead of Joseph.
Coughlin sounded worried about the whole situation. His whole purpose was to have Kiwanuka at linebacker. But now that Wilkinson is out, he didn’t even want to speculate on what any moves might be.

More injury news:
DT Fred Robbins and TE Jeremy Shockey sat out with calf sprains. That training program at The U. Shockey loves so much sure pays dividends, doesn’t it. Seems he’s always got something.
WR Plaxico Burress sat out his fourth day with a sprained right ankle. And C Todd Londot has a high ankle sprain.

Some practice notes:
It was a very good afternoon for both Amani Toomer and Michael Jennings, and a rough one for cornerback Sam Madison and Corey Webster.
Toomer had a fantastic catch over Madison on the deep sideline off a ball thrown right into the breadbasket by Eli Manning in a 5-on-7 drill. On the heels of that one, Toomer burned Madison again in an intermediate route, making a one-handed catch in front of the DB.
In the second team segment of the day, Toomer made a leaping sideline catch against Madison as the cornerback took him to the ground. And then Jennings made a nice catch in back of Webster’s hand-swat for a big gain.
It’s not that everyone did poorly on defense. Adrian Awasom produced a cover sack on Tim Hasselbeck in the team session. Anthony Wright’s throw to WR Kevin McMahan was intercepted by rookie S Michael Johnson, and Mathias Kiwanuka blew in for a sack on Manning.
Manning, by the way, failed to score on the final two-minute drill.
Best sight of the afternoon was watching fifth-round tight end Kevin Boss outwrestling CB Kevin Dockery on the sideline for a Hasselbeck completion. Tight end Darcy Johnson made a nice sliding grab of a low Jared Lorenzen throw in an early drill.
That’s it for today.
Ciao for now.

it seems training camp injuries are at an all time high. cannot recall as many players hurt in training camps prior to current coach. some say it is too much emphasis on weight training. giants lift heavy on a daily basis. most weight training experts feel every other day a better way.
