Long-snapper Ryan Kuehl was visibly in pain as he hobbled into the cafeteria on one crutch and a protective boot around his injured left calf. Suspicions are that he has at least partially torn his Achilles tendon, which would probably mean a season-ending trip to the injured reserve list.
Punter and holder Jeff Feagles was hoping against hope, however, considering his new snappers, Zak DeOssie and Jay Alford, have problems of youth the veteran Kuehl didn’t have.
Feagles said he has to be extra aware of where DeOssie is snapping, since some of them fly either wild high or wild low. Some of Alford’s field goal snaps have gone all over the place.
Not that Feagles can’t handle the adjustments to his younger snappers. But it’s just one more thing he has to prepare himself for when he hits the field, especially in the punting game.
“We’ll see how it goes,” said Feagles, who admitted that all of the youngsters’ problems were correctable with time and practice. “When I set up for a punt, I’m trying to gauge the wind, look at the defense, do a number of things. It’s like a golfer’s pre-swing routine. Now, I have to throw this into the routine.”
I wouldn’t worry about the snappers too much. Feagles is one of the best punters in the business and one of the best holders. If anyone can adjust to youth, it’s the 41-year-old. But there’s no doubt having the experienced, old reliable Kuehl back would be a huge plus and a weight off Feagles’ shoulders.
It just doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anytime soon, if ever this year.
Here’s another news flash. No sign of Michael Strahan. Don’t worry, Mike, we’ll leave the light on for you.
Be back with a practice update.
Ciao for now.
