Post Practice

Looks like David Tyree does have a fracture. He’ll undergo surgery tonight to have a pin placed in his broken left navicular bone in his wrist and should be out four to six weeks.

That’s a slow—healing injury, which is why the pin goes in. But don’t expect him to go on IR. Not right now, anyway. He’s much too valuable as a kick coverage specialist not to wait at least a couple of games to see if the wrist will allow him to play.

The Giants made seven of their eight required cuts, placing free agent defensive tackle Marcus Bell on the IR with a knee injury he incurred the first preseason game. He was the biggest name of a bunch that also included LB Karibi Dede (gonna miss him because we liked the name. Kind of exotic, you know), C Nick Jones, OL Myniya Smith, S Richard Yancy, and WR Will Buchanon.

FB Robert Douglas is going in for a scope on a torn meniscus, and WR Plaxico Burress missed practice to get a back problem checked out in Manhattan.

Interesting development: Reuben Droughns was working at fullback, and Coughlin said he will see work there in New England. He’s taking a good look at Droughns there, since the fullback isn’t going to be a huge part of this offense. Droughns, who worked some fullback in Denver, could free up a roster spot if he can handle the double—duty as fullback and Brandon Jacobs’ backup. If he can’t, there’s always the Michael Matthews option, especially in that he’s a 270—pound tight end perfectly capable of blocking in the backfield.

Any thoughts? Concerns? Advice for the injured and love—lorn?

Ciao for now.

How much time is Douglas likely to miss w/the torn meniscus? In a way, Droughns playing some FB w/Matthews as an H-back might be a better deal, anyway.

Ernie a couple of things. Is it really worth the Giants having so many people on IR if they don’t intend on having them next year. The list reads Jason Bell, Michael Stone, Marcus Bell (now), Darcy Johnson, and I’m not sure if Michael Jennings was placed on the IR list but I do know that he was put on the waived/injured list. Another thing, in your opinion do you think that Manny Wright has a chance to make the team? Toooo much typing but another thing I wanted your insight on…... Gerrick Mcphearson (5’10”197) and Darren Barnett (6’180) who they brought back. Do they have a chance of of making the squad with E.J. Underwood breaking his JAW out of all things. Did he not have a leather helmet for the game or does he like being put on IR every Jets game.

    Darryl:

A little rough on old E.J., no? Geez. The kid gets a busted jaw and can’t even answer you back.

As for Manny Wright, it would seem he’s got a shot. Coughlin was pretty impressed with one of his plays where he penetrated the backfield the other night. But those backups are always a dicey proposition. I don’t think he can contribute on special teams, so it may come down to numbers with him. It’s a good sign that he’s survived the first cuts so far.

Off hand, I would have said McPhearson had a chance to make it had he not sprained his ankle. Still might, considering the defensive backfield is so thin. They’re really banged up all over, but some guys will be coming back by the opener. Still, too many injuries for anybody’s liking.

    Hey Ernie:
Quick question—has Tom Coughlin acknowledged the exceptional play of Ahmad Bradshaw? Has he been asked where on the depth chart Bradshaw might end up? Do you foresee him getting playing time during the season? His downfield vision, quickness, ability to make people miss, and surprising amount of power make him a considerable weapon as a runner and a receiver. I think he should play a bigger role than projected in this year’s offense and I know other fans agree.

    Thanks,
    Austin

    Austin:

Actually, Coughlin has been fairly complimentary toward Bradshaw, but only in a sense that he’s fighting for a backup spot. I think they see him as a potential returner. He looks good as a runner, but as a third-down back he’s still got to get his blocking assignments down.

I’m sure he’ll make the final roster, since cutting him with the practice squad in mind would result in his being picked up by someone else. In time, I believe he’ll be a good change-of-pace guy.
