The Hot Seat

If Lawrence Tynes didn’t think he was on the hot seat before, he knows it now.
The Giants brought in Josh Huston, the inexperienced kid who made such a good impression in training camp, and veteran kicker Billy Cundiff for a tryout. Don’t know if they’ll sign either guy, but there’s nothing like a nice little tryout to light a fire under a struggling placekicker’s fanny.
Tom Coughlin wants to see exactly zero more of missed chipped shot field goals and extra points bouncing off the uprights. In fact, Coughlin was downright incredulous on Monday when asked about that missed PAT following Kawika Mitchell’s third-quarter touchdown return of a fumble.
“I don’t ever remember being around a missed extra point,” Coughlin said.
Neither kicker was signed. Today, that is. Tomorrow? Who knows. But Tynes should probably operate under the assumption that one more misstep (mis-kick?) will send him out the door.
Huston would be an interesting choice if another PAT clangs off the left upright. He barely lost the competition to Tynes, as Coughlin preferred going with the veteran.
Ciao for now.

Wouldn’t replacing Tynes with Huston be admitting that you screwed up and hired the wrong kicker in the first place?
Tynes is a great human interest story. The only Scotsman in the NFL. we have milked it for all it is worth. Now let’s get a kicker who we can rely on. It was scary to ralize 2 quick tds from a dangerous qb like mcnabb and we lose 17-16. cannot afford to carry a PK who misses an automatic conversion point.
Just don’t bring in Trey Junkin as the long snapper.
