Locking Tuck

Jerry Reese made yet another impressive move as general manager by locking up defensive lineman Justin Tuck with a five-year, $30 million extension. This is after he earlier extended fullback Madison Hedgecock and special teams player Chase Blackburn.
Getting Tuck into the fold long-term is huge, however. He had a great year. And if he stays healthy, he will become the new star of that defensive line. He’ll start as soon as Michael Strahan retires, which may be after this season, or maybe after next season at the latest. Tuck has shown himself an aggressive force both inside and out, and has been as valuable as any starter to the Giants’ pass rush success. Don’t forget his run-stopping ability, either. More than once, he’s chased tailbacks down in the backfield for tackles behind scrimmage.
Reese’s apparent philosophy of keeping young talent away from the free agent market is appropriate for this day and age. So is the salary. By the way, if Strahan comes back next year at $4 million, Tuck will be making $2 million more than the future Hall-of-Famer. He deserves it.
Ciao for now.
