Not that this has anything to do with Giants free agency, but I’ve been very critical in the past of the NFL’s handling of their disabled veteran players. So I wanted to put in a good word, for a change, about the changes the league and players association has made toward dispensing the benefits.
They’ve basically doubled the payout for permanent non-football disability for qualified veterans from $20,000 to $40,000 per year, and have made it possible for players who qualify for disability under social security but not under the NFL guidelines to appeal their cases. And those new ones who qualify for total disability under Social Security need not go through the league anymore to qualify separately.
Those are big steps, positive steps in taking care of these guys. There’s more that needs to be done, but at least these changes appear to go beyond the usual lip-service the guys have gotten in the past. So, good job to all. And keep working at it.
And now, back to the dollars and cents (or lack of sense?) of free agency.
Ciao for now.
