Some Comments On Sammy

Here’s what the Giants and Sammy Knight had to say about the Jacksonville safety’s signing this afternoon.
“We’re excited to have a veteran of Sammy’s caliber joining our secondary,” general manager Jerry Reese said. “We were attracted to how smart he plays and how productive and physical he plays. We think he will thrive in our defensive schemes. He brings a lot of leadership to the team, especially to the secondary, and he is a real pro.”
Said Tom Coughlin, “Sammy Knight is a durable, physical player with 42 career interceptions. He comes to the line of scrimmage extremely well. He’s a smart player who gets everybody lined up. He played in Kansas City for (secondary/cornerbacks coach) Peter Giunta, so we know all about the quality of the man. We feel like with his love of the game and his attitude about the idea of team that he’ll be a real nice fit for us. Sammy gives us another quality veteran who will definitely help our young guys in their development.”
Now, there’s a question going around that involves whether James Butler will slide over to free safety so Knight can play strong, where he has most of his career. But that doesn’t seem like a great idea, since Butler is really too slow to be a free safety. Plus, gotta love Knights hands. Let him roam around in centerfield and pick off passes.
Knight didn’t seem to care where he’ll end up, however. And why should he? He’s picked off five passes in a season five times in his career, making him a nice addition. The last Giants to do that was Emmanuel McDaniel, who had six in 2000.
“That’s been one of the things that I’ve done, and hopefully I can do that here,” Knight said. “I’m sure the way this system is, it will allow me to do that. I look forward to doing that.”Ciao for now.

ernie u think the giants may give fellow new yorker victor hobson a ring to help add some depth to the linebacking core
BBWC:
Don’t know. As of now, nothing’s scheduled. And you’d think if they were really interested, they’d have arranged a visit by now.
Any news on DeAngelo Hall, or is that basically dead now with the Knight signing?
Why dont the Giants sign a guy like Ian Gold or Rosevelt Colvin??
Bill:
The Hall thing is basically dead at this point until Hall comes down in price. Could happen later, but then it’ll depend on what the Falcons want. Giants won’t give up much more than the No. 1 pick.
KJ:
Colvin wouldn’t be good because he’s coming off an injury. But as I said in an earlier post, Gold would be intriguing. The Giants liked him the last time he came up for free agency. There’s been no contact yet that I know of, but let’s see what happens down the road.
Has Strahan retired yet?
It should not be assumed that Butler will be starting at either spot over Johnson. With the signing of Knight, Butler’s erratic play last year, and Johnson with super speed and looking pretty good towards the end of last season I think there is a very strong possibility that Johnson will win the Free Safety starting job and Knight will play to his strength at (no pun intended) Strong Safety.
