It’s Kenny Phillips

April
26

Well, a lot of people got this one right. Figuring the Giants’ most obvious hole, and what was out there, it should have been simple to figure they would pick Miami free safety Kenny Phillips to replace the departed free agent Gibril Wilson.

Naturally there was speculation that the Giants might go a different way and fill that spot another way—some thought R.W. McQuarters might move from corner to safety—or fill it later in the draft.

But the Giants went with the chalk. Phillips was there and they were up and so he was their pick.

The 6-2, 213-pound Phillips left Miami after his junior season to enter the draft. More later.

UPDATE: 7:05 p.m.—here’s a quick scouting report on Phillips:

Kenny Phillips (31st overall), FS, Miami, 6-2, 213 pounds: Phillips was the first safety selected in the draft, after opting in following his junior year. He had 203 tackles (133 solo), seven interceptions, three forced fumbles and one recovery in 34 games (33 starts) at Miami. The scouting report on Phillips is that of a player with good size (long arms, big upper body) and above-average speed who makes plays with quick acceleration and reaction skills. The downside is he tends to get reckless attacking the ball. Phillips said he can play, and has played at Miami, at either safety position.

newsflash for the worst site in the world…the giants picked again. who knows why they picked who they did – we usually rely on sites like yours to help us with this part – but you guys dropped the ball yet again, as you have ever since EP “left for vacation” and there is absolutely no update on their 2nd pick.

Thanks for the great info and hard work.
