The Giants will be charging season ticket holders a one-time fee of at least $1,000 to keep those tickets once the team moves to the new stadium, currently being constructed in East Rutherford, N.J. for the 2010 season.
Since current season tickets start at $800 for the upper bowl, the fee, called a personal seat license in stadium lingo, amounts to a doubling of the average ticket price. For those with better seats, the PSL could be as much as $20,000.
“We have spent months exploring our various options regarding the financing of the construction of the new stadium,” said John Mara in a statement. “Given construction costs and NFL and lender requirements for paying down our debt, and after much thought and analysis, we decided this PSL program is necessary. All the net proceeds from the sale of PSLs will be used to fund construction of the new stadium.”
Although the Giants made the announcement of the surcharge today, the team will not yet release the projected cost of season tickets once the stadium is built. There are currently 130,000 people on the waiting list for Giants season tickets.
Any season ticket holders out there care to react?

Ernie,
A PSL is usually a one time fee but your example of the $800 season tickets doubling makes it sound like a yearly fee.
Which is it?
My family has had season tickets since the 40’s (before I was born). With 20 tickets, this is going to be a HUGE expense.
Sorry for the confusion.
The PSL is a one-time fee. And there are certain rights that come with the seat, like being able tranfer it to anyone—i.e. sell it to the highest bidder. Which may make it extremely difficult to get tickets from the waiting list.
I am a season ticket holder and I will pay it if I can afford it. What else am I supposed to do. They are my father’s seats and have been in my family much longer than me. Any idea what the Mezzanine seats are gonna cost to keep?
Having said that…shame on the Mara and Tisch families. I am getting very sick and tired of hearing people who live in Rye and Greenwich (and still send their spawn to private schools) justify their greed by complaining about the costs of running their business. But I guess once Wellington died, so did any concern these families had for people who work for a living. Say goodbye to the Giants construction helmets at the new stadium except on a few posers.
We’ve had season tickets about 40 years now (before Giants Stadium), $1K a seat we can do, but $20K? No way. Our seats are in the lower bowl, but in the end zone, wonder what our PSL will be.
A key questions is whether the Giants will require people who want to sell their seat licenses to sell them back to the team or to people on the waiting list. If not, and people can just sell the licenses to anyone willing to pay for them, the waiting list becomes almost meaningless.
I wonder also if the Yankees and Mets will use this as an opportunity to adopt seat licenses for their new ballparks as well.
As a season ticket holder in 340, I am THRILLED that the PSL price is most likely only going to be 1,000 per seat. I was expecting something more along the lines of 10,000 per seat, at least.
This is good news for the fans who don’t have the best seats (although, I LOVE my seats), and terrible news for the people with really great seats.
