A license to sit

July
16

I hear that the football Giants are going to have something new to say about their personal seat licenses tomorrow. I’ve already heard from some of you and what you think about the idea of paying between $1,000 and $20,000 for the right to then buy season tickets, which by the way, are going to be more expensive, in the new stadium.

I’d love to hear from more of you guys. As you can imagine, most (like 100 percent) of the mail and email I’ve received is extremely negative, and I’ve already written that I think it’s a disgrace for the Giants to treat their fans this way, and that in my opinion this would not have ever happened if Mr. Wellington Mara was still alive.

So, what do you have to say about it?

My family has had season tickets for over 60 years – my grandfather went to games at Yankee stadium. He continues to go to games, but has given control over his seats to my uncle and my dad. The seats are lower level and my dad struggles every year to pay for our 2 seats, but he always finds a way because of our love for the team. Now he is going to have to pay at least 30 grand just so that we can continue to buy tickets (not to mention the prices going up) and his dream is to be able to hold on to them until I am able to afford them on my own. I just don’t know how much longer it will be possible to pay for the tickets at this rate. It’s starting to get out of control, and unless I hit the jackpot I’m not sure that I will be able to afford them someday at these rates. I do agree that if The Duke was still with us, he would never have allowed this to happen – he did his best to remember how important the fans are to the success of a team. While I’m sure there are plenty of people on the waiting list with the money to afford seats, they need to remember the people who have been supporting the franchise for such long periods of time. It’s all about the money these days – and there is more than one way to go about getting it. Don’t force it on the fans – get out there and do some fund raising yourself. Auction off dinners with players or tours of the stadium or all kinds of things. Giants fans would be willing to pay for things like that. I’m sure the Giants have a pretty good marketing department that could pull off some great fund raising events. Think a little harder instead of just taking the easy way out.

I’m not a season ticket holder, but have been a fan for 40 years. I think it is sad that loyal fans are treated in this manner. Craig is on the right track. how about selling off parts of the old stadium. or, a public auction might work. Fans might like to have the seats they used for so long a time. I would imagine that there are many things in the Giants locker room that would bring big bucks at auction.

Oh, they’re going to auction off stuff, you bet. But the money’s not going to any cause. It’s going right into their pockets. Count on that.

I am a season ticket holder that uses my tickets for every game. While not thrilled about a PSL I can certainly understand.

Many of our season ticket holders buy and flip their tickets for double the price. All they have to do is pay money in May and it doubles in July. It’s basically a risk free investment. They can do this because of the tremendous demand for the product. Many of the people creating that demand are people on the waiting list who will never get tickets under the current plan. Why give them up if you can make money treating them like an investment.

The Giants should be the ones making this profit not the season ticket holders. It is their product after all that is in demand. A PSL is their way of taking some of that profit being made in the secondary market.

It’s no longer a risk free investment for the season ticket holder flipping the ticket. PSL’s might actually eliminate a good number of those people and give people on the waiting list a chance to become season ticket holders.

Bottom line- too many season ticket holders treat their right to buy tickets as an investment. The Giants are now doing the same.

I was one of those dedicated Giants fans that helped us win the “GIANTS Tempt Destiny” billboard in support of the Giants going to Super Bowl XLII. What a great feeling to know that we had a part, in as much as there could be, in supporting the Giants Super Bowl victory. We had to spend our time and effort to compete against the Packers fans who almost beat us. So as promised by the TemptDestiny.com web site, we won the Super Bowl! Our reward for this extra effort? PSL! What a kick in the teeth!

  6. Sad Fan

I have been a season ticket holder for more than 40 years.

What a sad day for us Giant fans – in a time when the economy is the worse it has been in years – gas and food costs are skyrocketing the Mara’s hit us with PSL’s. Wow! Who builds a home without the finances to pay for it? It is amazing that the Mets are building Citi Field without PSL’s. Someone in the Mara clan did not do their checkbook properly. What average hardworking family person can afford this? Where does going to a “Game” fit into the family budget? We fans have children to educate, clothe and feed. For most this is becoming more of a struggle on a daily basis. The money should have come out of the pockets of the Mara and Tisch families not ours. You can rest assured that the Mara grandkids will still be attending the best schools that money can buy. I wish that Wellington was still with us – I probably have attended my last game.

What very sad day for us all. Time to invest in a good TV.
