The news coming from the Giants following Osi Umenyiora’s MRI is of the worst kind. He is out for the season with a torn lateral meniscus.
Here’s the official release:
Giants Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who left last night’s game against the Jets in the second quarter when his left knee locked up, underwent an MRI and exam today at Hospital for Special Surgery.
The finding by team physician Dr. Russell Warren is that Umemyiora has a torn lateral meniscus.
Umenyiora, who will miss the 2008 season due to the injury, is scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday.
This is not the first time Umenyiora has required surgery to repair cartilage damage in his left knee. He underwent arthroscopic surgery for the same issue during his collegiate career at Troy State.
We’ll see whether Tom Coughlin is going to throw in Renaldo Wynn or Dave Tollefson, or move Mathias Kiwanuka back up front. It’s going to be darn near impossible to manufacture the 13 sacks Umenyiora contributed last season. It’s going to be just as difficult replacing the personality Umenyiora brought to the defensive unit.
(Update 4:30 p.m.):
Tom Coughlin just wrapped up his conference call with the media, and there are not a lot of details available in terms of what the Giants are going to do to fill the sizable hole on the defensive line.
Here are some of the comments:
“Well, my No. 1 concern is about Osi,” Coughlin said. “I did talk to him on the phone a short while ago and told him that he’s in everyone’s thoughts and prayers. Dr. Warren has convinced us that this will put him in great shape going forward and because of that we’re certainly 100 percent behind the decision. We just hope the surgery goes well on Tuesday and that it is a full recovery.”
The possibility of convincing Michael Strahan to come running back was immediately raised.
“Someone has already raised that today, but I haven’t talked with anyone at this point in time about anything, to be honest with you,” Coughlin said. “I’m sure Jerry Reese and I and ownership will look long and hard at whatever option are out there and do what’s best here at this point in time.”
We probably won’t know whether moving Mathias Kiwanuka back to DE is a possibility until tomorrow at practice.
“I have not had a chance to talk with anyone,” Coughlin said. “I haven’t talked to the players or Kiwi or anyone this afternoon. Until I do that, I’ll just refrain from any thoughts about what might happen with our team.”
There was apparently not a non-surgical option available.
“I wouldn’t be able to tell you that,” Coughlin said of the recovery time. “It’s an extensive injury and it takes considerable time. … The doctors have told me that this will be four months of recovery.”

Here’s a chance for Strahan to get back what he lost in the divorce.
Any idea of the consequences of Strahan breaking his contract with Fox at this point? (If he were to come back…)
