Stirring it up in the locker room

The last thing anybody expected to walk into when the locker room opened this afternoon was a controversy.
Heck, the Giants are off to a 2-0 start.
Still, that isn’t stopping Justin Tuck and Derrick Ward from going nose-to-nose. It seems they are both claiming authorship of the now popular Earth, Wind and Fire label applied to the running backs.
Teammates are taking sides.
“I think Derrick Ward came up with the Earth, Wind and Fire thing, but I don’t know,” David Diehl said. “Some guys have that thing to make up nicknames.”
Wait a minute.
“No,” Tuck said. “He just co-signed on it. That’s all that was. You’re looking at the creator. I’m going to patent it so he can’t use it unless he asks me.”

I’m thinking somebody already owns the trademark.
OK, so it’s really not all that controversial. It’s just how a team that is 2-0 passes a Monday after showing a world of potential during a fourth-quarter outburst. The mood will grow more serious when the Giants reconvene on Wednesday and begin to game plan for Cincinnati.
Anyway, in case you’re wondering who’s earth, who’s wind and who’s fire, here’s one version from Tuck.
“I think, and they might tell you differently, but from my vantage point, I think, obviously, earth is 270-pound running back Brandon Jacobs,” he said. “I think wind is (Ahmad) Bradshaw because the wind curves and moves a lot. That’s him. And I think fire is kinda like the combination of all of it, and I think that would definitely be Ward because he has the ability to be a slasher and a power guy all in one.”
Ward, though, claims he’s wind.
“I disagree with him on that,” Tuck said.
There wasn’t much to deal with on an injury front. Getting CB R.W. McQuarters (calf) and K Lawrence Tynes (knee) back are the main concerns.
Last week, Tynes said he needed to be kicking 40 or 50 balls a day before he came back, and Tom Coughlin indicated he’s very close to that number. It doesn’t appear the Giants are going to wait and give Tynes an extra week since the bye follows the Bengals. If he’s ready, it sounds like he’s going on Sunday even though John Carney is perfect.
