Call it in the air.
Lawrence Tynes is heads. John Carney is tails.
While the Giants aren’t exactly dealing with a kicking controversy, a decision has to be made and Tom Coughlin wasn’t dropping any hints after practice.
“We’re both ready, s
o we’ll see what happens,” said Carney, who’s 9 for 9 on field goal attempts.
Tynes is coming back from a freak knee injury suffered late in training camp. He survived a full workload in practice this week and feels certain there will be no health issues going forward. There is occasional swelling in the knee, but Tynes and Coughlin are not concerned.
So now everybody waits.
“I prepared this week as if I was going to play on Sunday, and they’ll tell us when we get here,” Tynes said.
Neither one seemed to mind the momentary confusion.
“You just have to prepare as you would for any game, and if the decisions made and they’re not calling you’re number, it’s easy,” Carney said. “You just put on your street clothes and go out on the sideline. But if you go and do the opposite, and don’t think you’re going to play, and they call your number, it’s hard to gear up that quickly so you just prepare to play.”

Carney has been flawless so far and it would be foolish to switch to Tynes now. Tynes may have a slightly longer range but in a clutch situation with a kick under 50 yards (which most kicks are), Carney is the better choice.
They should put Tynes on IR.
Why in the world would Coughlin mess with what is working? Please don’t replace Carney with Tynes until the move NEEDS to be made!
Carney’s only weakness that i can see is a pretty glaring one. Most of his kickoffs fall well short of what would be defined as “acceptable” range. Though he might be perfect on FG’s and point afters, his kickoffs can really wear down a defense if they have to start on the 40 every drive.
Tynes is very shaky and wouldn’t be my first or second choice for a reliable kicker, remember Green bay when he couldn’t close the deal the first time? Coughlin would be doing the team a favor by cutting him and let another nfl team the unreliable kicker.
Why can’t they have two kickers? If I’m not mistaken a while ago a team, maybe the Giants, had a kickoff kicker and a placekicker. The kickoff kicker could kick it a mile, but not that accurately while the place kicker was very accurate, but had short kickoffs.
