Bradshaw not practicing, either

November
26

Forget what I wrote earlier about there not being any surprises on the injury report.

Ahmad Bradshaw is not in the practice bubble right now. He was not on the list this morning, but we’re told the second-year running back is here getting treatment for an undisclosed injury.

The individual drills were a little thin.

Derrick Ward, Reuben Droughns, Danny Ware and Madison Hedgecock were the only running backs going full speed this morning. We did see Brandon Jacobs on the field jogging through some of the basics, too.

Hopefully, we’ll get more about Bradshaw later if he’s at his locker.

Burress is day-to-day

November
26

The injury list did not include any surprises this morning, and there was no major revelation after Plaxico Burress went in for an MRI.

“He has a hamstring injury,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said.

Thanks.

“He will not practice today and he’ll be day-to-day,” Coughlin added.

Apparently, there is no significant tear. There is no exact timetable being that hamstring strains are quirky and usually require to player to live with some degree of pain.

“I hope it can be something that is overcome in a short period of time,” Coughlin said. “But let’s face it, it’s a hamstring.”

Brandon Jacobs (knee) is also being held out today, but is expected to participate tomorrow. Fred Robbins (shoulder) and Jonathan Goff (hamstring) are out today, as well.

Burress still feeling the hamstring

November
25

Plaxico Burress was able to hobble into Madison Square Garden tonight with a host of A-list celebs to watch LeBron James.

He spoke with MSG Network reporter Jill Martin at halftime.

When asked about James buying New Yorkers hot dogs, a little promotional stunt cooked up by Nike, the injured wideout came up with a great punch line.

“I didn’t get one,” Burress said. “I don’t eat hot dogs, but I think he has enough money to buy everybody here a couple lobster tails, Fillet Mignon. I think we got shorted a little bit.”

As for the hamstring …

“It’s a little sore,” Burress said. “It’s something I’m going to take it day by day, keep getting the rehab, keep getting the treatment and hopefully I can get back out there as soon as possible.”

The secret is out

November
24

Based on the airport population I encountered this morning, very few people go to grandmother’s house anymore. It seems that particular demographic is heading in force to visit their grandchildren for Thanksgiving week in aqua blue sweat suits with matching heels.

Anyway …

I chuckled yesterday when Derrick Ward shrugged off his expanded role in typical fashion. He filled in for Brandon Jacobs, which is apparently no big deal.

“To be honest with you I play more than B.J. anyway with all the third downs we have,” Ward said. “I knew I was going to have a different role than I had in previous games.”

Ward is really doing a great job catching passes out of the backfield, which has to be as confounding as running for 100 yards to the opposing defense.

And while on the plane, I came across a public service announcement from Tony Romo.

“The time is now,” he said. “We have put ourselves in the hunt for a playoff spot. … The Giants have a tough schedule. I know everybody is kind of giving them the division. They’re playing great football. But if they lose one or two along the way, we still play them at some point. We’ll see.”

Giants at Cardinals

November
23

It usually doesn’t take long for the Giants to make an impression, but the first two drives weren’t impressive.

Domenik Hixon is the leading rusher.

And we just heard the first injury update of the game. Plaxico Burress aggravated the hamstring and his return is doubtful.

The defense is going to wear down in a hurry unless the offensive line regroups and starts opening holes and giving Eli Manning time in the pocket.

(Update 4:49) I think we just saw how much confidence Tom Coughlin has in this defense right now, going on fourth-and-one from 35. Phoenix is really quick to the ball. We’re going to find out whether Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw really do benefit from Brandon Jacobs softening up the defense.

(Update 4:55) Are you breathing a little easier now? Hixon is all over the place. Ward is getting some confidence. How good is he catching out of the backfield?

(Update 5:17) Shaun O’Hara probably needs to stop fighting battles for teammates. I believe that’s his second unsportsmanlike penalty this season for going after somebody following the whistle. And the short field is making life easier for Kurt Warner and the Cardinals.

(Update 5:49) I wonder if Donovan McNabb has ever heard of a fair catch kick. And just in case you’re wondering, that play hasn’t worked since 1968. Thank you Google. I’m thinking the first order of business in the locker room is to count heads and make sure Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka are here. Except for the last series they’ve been awfully quiet. I’m off to find a snack.

(Update 6:12) They’re here. Tuck and Kiwi just provided great field position. And while my nachos get cold, here’s a little note on Jacobs passed upstairs. “I practiced on Thursday and Friday and really felt I would play today,” he said. “When I came to the stadium today, I talked to (head trainer) Ronnie Barnes and the coaches, and I told them that I was not confident that I would be able to play at the level I expect and they expect.” And look at this, Madison Hedgecock not only caught the ball, he managed to absorb so major hits and land in the end zone.

(Update 7:00) Manning looks pretty comfortable again, like he’s been waiting for an opportunity to drop back and fire 40 times a game. It’s a coming out party for Terrell Thomas. About the only thing you need to worry about now is the injury situation.

Jacobs won’t go, Burress is ready

November
23

Plaxico Burress is up and running. Brandon Jacobs is not.

We have the list of inactives and Jacobs leads the list. Derrick Ward is going to start in his place. The rest of the inactives are: K Lawrence Tynes, S Sammy Knight, CB Sam Madison, LB Gerris Wilkinson, T Adam Koets, WR Mario Manningham, DE Jerome McDougle.

Do you suppose Kevin Gilbride is going to open the offense up again?

Eli Manning hasn’t celebrated a 200-yard game since Oct. 5 when he picked Seattle apart. Burress also has to be waiting for a breakout game.

For the Cardinals, the inactives are: QB Brian St. Pierre, LB Clark Haggans, T Elliot Vallejo, T Brandon Keith, DT Alan Branch, WR Early Doucet, TE Leonard Pope, TE Jerame Tuman.

Burress is testing the hamstring

November
23

Is there a better place in the league to spend a sunny afternoon tailgating?

They’ve got a tent city laid out here on the grass featuring all kinds of eats and drinks. A band is playing and those who have satellites are watching the Cowboys or the Jets.

I did notice most of the female population is partial to Matt Leinart jerseys. Why do you suppose that is?

Plaxico Burress is on the field running pass routes and catching balls from Eli right now. He stretched out, did some jogging, and then shifted into full speed. I’m not even going to guess whether he’s playing or not, but the warm-up looks promising.

I also see John Carney loosening up. Does that mean Lawrence Tynes is the bad-weather kicker now?

Counting down to kickoff in the desert

November
23

I just walked outside and tested my hamstring, and I’m good to go.

The long flight is never fun, but Plaxico Burress has to be happy about waking up out here. It’s almost 60 degrees right now and is expected to get up to 80 degrees before the sun drops behind the mountains. Next week is more important, so he’s got to be very careful.

More on him later.

I can’t think of what statement the Giants could make by winning today, which is a first. They’ve proven so much already. A win means far more to the Cardinals.

“We are a long ways from getting credibility out here in Arizona,” Kurt Warner said. “I think for so long we haven’t had success and we haven’t played good football. I think a win against a team like the Giants would obviously give us more creditability. I still think we have a long ways to go. And I think that comes from consistency and doing it year in and year out and game in and game out. And we are not there yet. And so I don’t expect anybody to give us anything. You want to be a team that has to earn it, and I think we still have to earn it. I think we are gaining a little bit bit-by-bit, little pieces here and there, but we have a long way to go. A win against somebody like the Giants, who may well be the best team in the NFL, would obviously go a long way to add to that creditability.”

Don’t forget, the Cardinals are within a win of clinching a division title.

Quote of the week

November
22

Since the Giants are routinely pushing aside strong defenses and piling up rushing yardage, there have been all kinds of compliments for the offensive line.

Madison Hedgecock, too.

The fullback has indeed been opening wide berths for Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Jacobs to run through. So does he deserve at least one carry this season for all of the hard work to date?

“I think he’d get a yard in a cloud of dust,” David Diehl said. “We’re more excited about Earth, Wind and Fire back there.”

Whatever happened to the 5-second rule?

November
21

So after we got done talking with Tom Coughlin up in the bubble this afternoon, the media headed down to the locker room where a slightly unnerving sight got everyone’s attention.

In front of every locker was a frozen turkey or spiral-cut ham.

Ordinarily, the camera would’ve been out and clicking, but I’m not taking pictures in a locker room setting. So you have to imagine next week’s main course sitting on the floor amidst smelly cleats, torn ankle tape, dirty socks and sweaty underthings.

Pass the cranberries, please!!!

And here’s the most pressing issue, the bird Antonio Pierce got from the Giants was several pounds smaller than the turkey rookie Terrell Thomas hauled out.
