The long goodbye

January
12

We’ll get into some of the particulars of today a little later on. In the spirit of moving forward, where do the Giants need to improve?

It’s a discussion that will start upstairs any minute now.

The offensive inconsistency coincides with the exile of Plaxico Burress, who needs to resolve some pressing legal issues before we know whether the organization might consider a comeback. Would you like to see an explosive wideout added?

“I don’t know, I like our receivers,” Eli Manning said. “I like the guys we have. Some of it’s just having those guys grow. Steve Smith is turning into a good receiver, see if we can use him more. Domenik Hixon is a good receiver. Get Mario Manningham back in the action. We have weapons. It’s a matter of getting them ready and getting them prepared and seeing how we can use their skills.”

Perhaps you think the linebackers need to be upgraded.

Maybe the list of things general manager Jerry Reese has to get done starts with resigning Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward. Can the Giants afford to pay both? Can they afford not to?

Let me know what your biggest concerns are coming off yesterday’s loss.

Not sure if Eli referenced Toomer during his response about the Giants receivers, but he’s a free agent now and I wonder if he’s going to be resigned for another year. The Giants have some promising, young recieving talent (Smith, Boss (I know he’s a TE), Manningham? – not sure since he wasn’t on the field at all). Moss is also young, but not sure how promising he is since he was rarely on the field. Although the times he did play I think he held his own. Hixon can be a solid receiver but he’s certainly not a #1 (nor #2 for that matter…). The Giants need some playmakers at the reciever position that can keep defenses honest. But of course, they also need a QB that is going to accurately deliver the ball…hopefully Eli can work on his accuracy (which, believe it or not, this year he had a career high completion %) because one of the reasons why the offense fell flat is because teams started stacking the line to stop the run and Eli did not make them pay for it.
Overall, I’m proud of this team, just very dissapointed of how it ended. They just need to upgrade a few key positions and there is no reason why they can’t make the playoffs again next season.

Eli is right – they have a lot of offensive weapons, and the defense has been playing well. They just need to use what they have more intelligently. Play calling leaves a lot to be desired. They need a new offensive coordinator.

    Jacobs is a must.

  5. Derrick

Out of the free agents we have we have to sign Jacobs, no questions asked. For the rest … Derrick Ward and Amani Toomer may have to be let go. I am unsure of how much money they would spend use the franchise tag on Ward, but I would think about that. James Butler can go as well as Anthony Wright. Keep David Carr and Grey Ruegamer and let Renaldo Wynn, Jerome McDougle, R.W. McQuarters, John Carney, and Rich Scanlon.

The free agents they have to target are Karlos Dansby (OLB) from Arizona, T.J. Houshmandzadeh (WR) from the Bengals and maybe even think about a guy like Dominic Rhodes (RB) Colts. We lack a RB who can catch a pass out of the backfield like Tiki used to and I think he can fit as a 3rd down back (this only happens if we let Ward go).

We have to go into the draft with a heavy priority for a OLB, ILB, WR, OL (depth is needed).

I would let Gilbride go as well. Outside from all the Eli sucks and he cant play it is the job of the offensive coordinator to draw up plays that will benefit his players and the team. Last season he had a free ride. They didnt utilize the RB’s and they didnt threw the ball well over the middle to Boss when they had some success. They could have gone went to him more often down the seem. Its very unfortunate.
