Just a thought on Toomer

I guess we have to give Amani Toomer some credit for rethinking comments made yesterday that certainly seemed to blame the organization for not allowing him to play a larger role in a struggling offense. He even posted a number of clarifications on his personal website.
Of course, there’s no way to look graceful after you slip on the ice.
“I absolutely did not intend to criticize nor did I criticize the coaching staff’s game plans,” Toomer said on the site. “What I did say was that I thought the team as a whole had less focus this year than they did last year and that I almost could see this loss coming. That has nothing to do with the coaches.
“I do however feel that I was underutilized in the last few games and as I told you earlier in an interview, I thought it was probably to try and develop the younger players. But it is true that I believe I could have made a greater contribution than I did. So, I think some of what got reported was inaccurate.”
So there.
What comes across is the fact Toomer is not happy with the situation. Should the Giants even attempt to negotiate a deal with an influential wide receiver that may not be willing to play a supporting role?
Somebody has to bridge the gap on the field and off.
There’s a reason why people like Corey Webster and Michael Johnson and Kenny Phillips are developing so quickly. Veterans like R.W. McQuarters and Sam Madison were always in their ears. Domenik Hixon and Steve Smith and Mario Manningham need a similar voice of reason.
On the field, Plaxico Burress isn’t likely to be in the picture, so the Giants may be looking for a wide receiver in the draft. They would probably have to move up from No. 29 to grab an impact player. And while draft picks should be considered a precious commodity, the Giants are relatively young. The can afford to put off a couple of projects to fill a need in a hurry.
What might somebody like Michael Crabtree go for two years down the road?
They could also go for a Band-Aid, grab T.J. Houshmandzadeh on the open market and utilize him as the No. 1 target until somebody like Manningham or a lesser draft pick matures. A trade for Tony Gonzalez is also something Jerry Reese might consider to improve Eli Manning’s comfort level on third down.
Thoughts?

There’s no chance for the Giants to get Crabtree without giving away the city! Even with the extra 2nd and 5th from the Saints, there’s just way to big of a gap between 29 and the top 4 or spot where Crabtree will be taken. T.J. would be a band-aid and sometimes band-aids prevent the “healing” process, so I’m not sure if that’s the solution either. Having a guy like Gonzalez on the team would give veteran leadership to Boss as well as provide Eli with more Pro Bowl caliber hands to throw to and take pressure off whomever is the starting wideout. Hixon will not be as much of a stretch as people think to rise up as a solid #1 guy with more time and experiences and with Tony added to the mix, the Giants offense could still be productive.
Now the most important thing to me would be making sure that Bill Sheridan keeps teams from converting 3rd and 20’s on us. Aside from that, the G-men will be returning with a very formidable team.
The ideal situation for me would be to get Plax back and playing in 2009 with his head on straight hopefully after the sh!t he pulled this year and to trade for Gonzo and get another vetern wide reciever as a 2nd or slot guy. You would have Hixon, Burress starting and go with 2 TE packaged quite often which would be awesome plus a vetern slot guy and we would be set….
I feel not pulling the plug on the gonzalez trade was a mistake. You cant tell me if we score a couple of more tds in the playoff game, and Tony could do that…we would be playing this weekend. Wouldnt most people trade a 3rd for a trip to a super bowl?
That being said… I am not seeling the farm for crabtree…. If we have to, use our 2 2s on a set of wr…..Sign Bryant Johnson of 49ers…Get gonzalex for a 3rd…And we would be set….
Crabtree would be nice.
Housh would be ok
Bolden would probably be the best
Plax coming back would be 2nd best
I have to agree with Brandon Jacobs though, I want to see Plax back as a Giant. He has built Chemistry with Eli that just makes it work. I also agree that he will be a different Plax when it comes to making off the field choices.
I think Mike, you have a point with Toomer being the vetern leadership to help grow the young guys. If he can get a 3 year deal, thats probably the end for him because most guys dont play much longer than 37.
Also, our slot guy is Steve Smith. Who for the most part comes up big when needed.
I really would like the idea of getting a Bolden or TJ Houshmandzadeh to be a big play threat down the field that we desperately needed this past year and the last few games showed that. If it is possible to trade and get a Crabtree that would be great but rookies rarely are #1 receivers and I think that Mario Manningham will become a big play threat either this next year or the following year. Say Giants get TJ H. or A Bolden were looking at one of those, Hixon, Smith, and Manningham which isn’t bad and Boss is really developing so our offense should be fine.
Manningham might improve if he would actually take part in spring training.
The bum not only thought he was too cool to practice but as a rookie he thought he was too cool to sign autographs….he’s no Plax ill tell ya that.
And heres my rant about that too…David Tyree makes one catch in the superbowl to “define” his career and he thinks hes too good to sign a few autographs…then he goes on the radio saying how he loves camp…hates that he had a bum knee and how he like to connect with the fans…well he did no connecting because for the first 3 days of camp he did nothing other than walk as far away from the fans as possible not even looking up.
Sorry for the rant…i needed to get it off my chest.
TJ Houshmanzadeh could possibly be available if he doesn’t resign…
Also the WR #88 from North Carolina is really good..#88
The Giants have a good shot at getting him.
If we have enough to move up and get Crabtree? – YES
Sign Houshmanzadeh – YES
Trade for Boldin – Yes
Gonzalez – No. Boss is fine, he doesn’t need competition
