Adjourning Plaxico

Plaxico Burress will make his appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court tomorrow, as planned, but only for purposes of getting an adjournment in his illegal gun possession case. His attorney, Benjamin Brafman, told two major dailies in e-mails that “He will be there, but it will be an adjournment only.” That means the case will be extended, perhaps to give the sides more time to work out a plea deal. How long a period the court allows for that remains to be seen.
You might also remember that the NFL can step into this after the legal process concludes, however long that may be. It’s entirely likely commissioner Roger Goodell will hand down a suspension for violating the conduct clause regardless of whether or not Burress gets jail time.

Ern,
What affect do you think the Giants-imposed suspension will have on Commish Goodell’s thinking? In my opinion, Goodell should count those 4(?) games as part of any suspension he levies (whether he officially acknowledges this or not.)
Al:
I’m assuming you mean a time-served sort of thing. But those four games might not exist, pending the grievance hearings that are also scheduled to begin today (Tuesday). The NFLPA maintains that the suspension and loss of pay and bonus money the Giants levied when Plax shot himself was excessive, and they’re trying to retrieve much of it. If they’re successful, I’m thinking Goodell might just drop the hammer that much more on him. I’m going to have to check out what the limits on league suspensions are.
A complicated issue for a complicated player.
