Boley Down

June
24

Remember that injury list that seem to grow exponentially during minicamp. It just got a person longer, and a lot more perilous.

Michael Boley, the weakside linebacker the Giants just handed a five-year, $25 million free agent contract, underwent arthroscopic surgery today to repair a torn hip labrum. The expected recovery time is eight to 10 weeks. Doing the quick math, that means with an Aug. 2 reporting date, Boley will miss at least half, and possibly all of training camp. And that’s not good news for a guy who was penciled in as a starting linebacker. He needed those reps to get accustomed to Bill Sheridan’s system after dealing with both coaching and philosophical changes over four years in Atlanta.

Boley had shown much promise during minicamp, at one point displaying his coverage abilities as well as his pass-rush potential. But if he misses camp, one has to assume all bets are off. It will be a matter of whether he’s learned enough in the offseason to create a seamless fit into his new system.

Looks like Chase Blackburn and Gerris Wilkinson should plan on increased workloads during camp. That’ll be big for Wilkinson, who after five starts was bitten by the injury bug that has plagued him first three years in the league. Blackburn handled weakside last year following Bryan Kehl’s injury-shortened two-start stint in place of Wilkinson, but spent most of minicamp in the rehab circle.

Tell me what you think of the situation? Is Boley a good enough player to come in and make an impact after only half a camp, or perhaps no camp at all?

The Giants also signed two more of their draft picks—third-round receiver Ramses Barden and fifth-round quarterback Rhett Bomar. Seventh-year tight end George Wrightster was waived along with first-year offensive lineman Mike Fladell to create roster space.

If I get any terms on Barden and Bomar, you’ll be the first to know.

UPDATE: Bomar’s deal has been reported at four-years, $1.935 million with an $895,000 signing bonus.

Not good news on Boley at all, I think he wont catch up until the 4th or 5th game. I wasnt that big a fan of the signing as the Gmen signed him early and we could have gotten a better player later on.

This is unfortunate news. Is this the same surgery A-Rod had on his hip?

The silver lining, as you suggest Mike, is that some of the younger guys will get reps. Hopefully, Boley is smart enough, a fast enough learner, and enough of a professional to be able to bounce back quickly from this surgery once the season begins.

OMG!! the season hasn’t even started and already we’re the walking wounded???? Now a days with the special trainers and the intence rehab, he could get back on time, but will have to study hard during the rehab time!!!
On a lighter note, Thanks Ernie for the news about Ramese Barden!! I have been on a crusading for this kid to be signed with us since I saw him in the combine!!! You tell him to make me proud!! I pushed for him!! This kid will do great with Eli! he has no bad habits coming from a small school!!!
    Congratulation to you Ramese!!!
Lastly??? What did you do with Mike Dougherty?? did you leave him out out at Bethpage??? LOL!!!

I don’t think its the end of the world. Blackburn is a good LB and will replace just fine in camp. As long as he can learn while he’s rehabbing… even to go as far as standing with Sheridan during camp so if he has questions he can ask them. It also gives him the best view outside of actually being in the play.
I think Boley has great athleticism and that will be enough…as long as his mental game is in tip top shape.

also Barden… very excited about that as well. he a big strong receiver that as long as he can get off the line well… because that was a concern… he’s going to be explosive. Also i think with Nicks and Smith this core of receivers will be more dominate than people think.
Eli finally gets a group of guys he can mold into what makes him comfortable.
my prediction is Eli throw a career low interceptions this season.

I’m with you(Eric44) on the low interception rating!!! With this young wide-eyed core we can break out and keep the defence on there heels with this new line a weapons!!
Glad you feel as stronge about Ramese!!
