Ernie Palladino

Ernie PalladinoErnie Palladino has been a fixture with Westchester-Rockland-Putnam readers since 1976, when he came to The Journal News (then the Reporter Dispatch) as a part-time sportswriter while attending Fordham University. Since then, the Eastchester native and graduate of Eastchester High has touched on just about every sport imaginable. He has covered two no-hitters since working his first pro baseball game in 1979: Dwight Gooden’s Yankee Stadium no-no against Seattle on May 14, 1996, and one of the strangest in baseball history on June 11, 2003 as six Astros pitchers shut down the Yankees at the Stadium. Palladino has covered 10 Super Bowls, including the Giants’ “Wide Right? victory over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV and their loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV. He has won several awards. But his most cherished possession is a pen-and-ink portrait of himself in the Giants press box, sketched and inscribed by the great Journal News artist Frank Becerra a couple of years after Palladino took over the Giants beat. It hangs, framed, in his office.

Carr and Clark agree

March
12

Quarterback David Carr and linebacker Danny Clark agreed to contracts with the Giants this afternoon. I’ll try to get some figures, but Carr is believed to be a one-year deal.

Not a bad pickup as Eli Manning’s backup. He might just be decent behind a good line in the event of an emergency.

Ciao for now.

Going With What They Know

March
12

There’s nothing like bringing in free agent prospects that you’ve had some relationship with ahead of time. And that’s exactly what the Giants have right now as they visit with quarterback David Carr and linebacker Danny Clark.

Both have previous connections with Giants coaches. Carr, of course, worked under quarterbacks coach Chris Palmer from 2002-2005 when [...]

Carr Visiting

March
10

According to a little source with big ears, released Carolina quarterback David Carr will be arriving tomorrow night for some meet and greet stuff with the coaches, and then complete his visit Wednesday. Unless his price is too high (unlikely) or that he indicates his arm or back aren’t sound (also unlikely), look for quarterbacks [...]

Carr’s On The Table

March
10

As they search around for an upgrade for Eli Manning’s backup, the Giants may try to get released Panthers quarterback David Carr in for a visit.

Let’s say, just for argument’s sake, they do sign Carr. For one thing, he’d be three years younger than the 32-year-old Wright. Plus, he’d represent a far different style than [...]

Inspiring Story

March
10

Very quiet with the Giants at this point, though the Jets did sign Miami’s journeyman running back Jesse Chatman to, what else, a free agent contract. One year for a guy who may or may not make the roster, so no big deal.

But I did run into this inspiring story about the Baltimore Ravens’ director [...]

No Kelly, No Coughlin

March
6

Tampa Bay cornerback Brian Kelly apparently has left the building, without a contract. Chances are, he’ll sign with Detroit where he can compete for a starting job.

And we’re still waiting for Tom Coughlin’s long-expected extension to be signed. I guess when you’re dealing with $20 million, the language can’t be precise enough.

Ciao for now.

So Long, Sean!

March
6

Well, even though it doesn’t impact the league like Brett Favre’s retirement announcement two days ago, this one should hit home for a lot of Giants fans. Punter Sean Landeta, a Giants fixture from 1985-93 before a short stint in 2006, formally called it quits today at age 46, 25 years to the day after [...]

Kelly Visiting Tomorrow

March
5

Tampa Bay cornerback Brian Kelly will be at Giants Stadium tomorrow, a day after he visited the Lions. Just thought you’d like to know that.

Ciao for now.

Kelly Coming?

March
5

With their vacant safety spot taken care of, the Giants are now trying to shore up their cornerbacks. They’ve made contact with agent Gary Uberstine, the same guy who repped newly-signed Sammy Knight, about Tampa Bay cornerback Brian Kelly. No word of a visit yet, but they’re trying.

Kelly bought himself out of the last year [...]

Javon Walker?

March
4

If you were wondering why the Giants showed no great interest in released Denver wide receiver Javon Walker, here’s a good reason.

Six years, $55 million, $16 million guaranteed.

That’s what the Raiders reportedly just handed Walker, a guy with a bad knee and a questionable attitude. About the only other team that wants to play in [...]
